Lack of consumer trust and confidence in electronic commerce platforms has been cited by experts as one of the causes of the slow growth of e-commerce in Zambia. Currently, many consumers in Zambia associate local online selling with Fraud, this is because much of what many consumers have come to regard as the front line e-commerce is the so-called ‘online stores’ on Facebook which largely are unregulated. Many consumers are doubtful about the delivery of the items purchased, and even if they are delivered, whether they can get any recourse or refund in case of defects to the products. This association of these online transactions with Fraud has also affected normal online stores as consumers generally lack the confidence in e-commerce. The general lack of trust is also extended to other e-commerce products such as FinTech Apps. E-commerce Expo Zambia promises to be a platform to start the public conversation about what measures Government is taking to address these issues in order for the consumers to start building confidence in e-commerce. According to a report found on export.gov, a United States Department of Commerce site, there is very little discussion about domestic e-commerce in Zambia. E-commerce Expo Zambia is the only event in Zambia solely dedicated to promoting e-commerce and one of the uniqueness of the event is that unlike many Expos that only focus on already established businesses, E-commerce Expo Zambia brings the big businesses and the SME’s under one roof. The event will be held in June 2018 at the Mulungushi Conference Centre under the theme “E-commerce – a catalyst in Zambia’s economic growth”. The expo content will include Online Banking, Fintech, Digital Marketing, Mobile banking, Cyber Security, Online Payments, Internet access, last mile delivery, Mobile Applications, Crypto Currency and e-commerce websites.
The expo is organized by the Institute for Finance and Economics (IFE) a Zambian organization founded by Dr. Caleb Fundanga, the former Bank of Zambia Governor, Mobile Sporting and West Indigo LLC a United States of America based Company.
